How we handle the paperwork.
West Vancouver does not generally require a permit for a fence. Height depends on your zone: in the RS5, RS9, RD1, RD2 and RD3 zones it is 1.2 m within a front yard and 1.8 m elsewhere on the site, and on other residentially zoned sites 1.8 m in the front yard and 2.4 m elsewhere. Two local catches we check for first, because they bite on exactly the terraced and waterfront lots we work on: a fence on or within 1.2 m of a retaining wall is capped at 1.8 m street side and 2.4 m elsewhere measured from the bottom of the wall, and in a waterfront yard structures including garden walls are held to 1.2 m. A fence crossing a statutory right of way must cross at 90 degrees, use removable panels, keep posts out of the right of way, and be approved by Land Development. A wall that retains soil is a separate matter from a fence and is permitted separately — we flag that before we quote. Source: District of West Vancouver Zoning Bylaw 4662, Section 130.17.
