Vancouver permits
How we handle the paperwork.
Vancouver does not require a permit for a fence on a single detached or duplex lot at four feet or less along the front yard perimeter, or six feet or less along the sides and rear. A standard six-foot back-yard fence needs no permit at all. It is only a front-yard fence above the limit that goes to the Director of Planning for a development permit. Two details that catch people: the by-law figure is 1.2 m, which is 3 ft 11 in rather than a full four feet, and a fence on or within 1 m of a shared boundary retaining wall has its allowance cut by half the wall's height. Vancouver also counts arbours, archways, gates, pergolas, screens and trellises as fences. A wall that retains soil is a separate matter from a fence and is permitted separately — we flag that before we quote. Source: City of Vancouver, Building a fence or wall, read 2026-10-07.
