How we handle the paperwork.
North Vancouver is two authorities with different rules, so the first thing we establish is which one your address falls under. In the District, a regular lot is capped at 6 ft (1.8 m) within 25 ft of the front property line and 8 ft (2.4 m) behind that line; on a corner lot a second 25 ft band is measured in from the street side as well, so the 8 ft area is smaller. A fence sitting on a rock or retaining wall has to keep the combined height within the limit. In the City, a fence of 1.22 m (4 ft) or less may go anywhere on the lot, 1.829 m (6 ft) is allowed to the rear of the front face of the house, the overall cap is 3.658 m (12 ft), and nothing over 0.914 m (3 ft) may sit within 4.57 m of an intersection. Neither authority requires a building permit for a standard residential fence. A wall that retains soil is a separate matter from a fence and is permitted separately — we flag that before we quote.
