Bathroom tile and flooring that lasts comes down to four checkable specs: water absorption (porosity), abrasion resistance, wet slip resistance (DCOF), and — for vinyl plank — wear layer thickness. Everything else is taste.
Most bathroom floors that fail don't fail because someone picked an ugly tile. They fail because nobody checked a number. A tile rated for walls goes on a floor and crazes. A polished stone goes into a family bathroom and turns into a skating rink the first time someone steps out of the shower. A budget vinyl plank with a paper-thin wear layer scuffs grey in front of the vanity within two years.

1. Porosity: the single most important tile spec in a bathroom
Tile is classified by how much water its body absorbs, measured under ASTM C373 and grouped in ANSI A137.1. The lower the absorption, the less water gets into the tile body — which is what matters in a room that gets steamed daily.

That 0.5% line is the actual definition of porcelain under ANSI A137.1 — a tile is porcelain because it tests at or below 0.5% absorption, not because a showroom sign says so. It's also why porcelain is genuinely different from ordinary ceramic rather than just a nicer word for it.
What this means for you: ask for the water absorption figure, not the marketing name. If the supplier can't produce it, that's your answer.
2. Abrasion: the PEI number, and what it actually tells you
Glazed tile is tested for visible abrasion resistance under ASTM C1027 — an abrasive load is rotated across the glaze, and the tile is classified by the point at which wear first becomes visible against an unworn control. That result is what the industry calls the PEI rating.
Two honest caveats worth knowing before you lean on it:
- ANSI A137.1's correct term is visible abrasion classification. "PEI rating" is the common shorthand, not the standard's language.
- The TCNA has publicly discussed the limits of C1027 — the test measures when abrasion becomes visible, which doesn't always track real-world wear, particularly on dark tiles where scratches show sooner.
Used correctly, it's still a useful filter. The classification runs from 0 to 5, and manufacturers publish it against these recommended uses:
- Class 0 — not recommended for floor application. Wall tile.
- Class 1 — light traffic: residential floors walked on in soft-soled or normal footwear without scratching dirt, the standard's own example being domestic bathrooms and bedrooms with no exterior access.
- Class 2 — medium to light traffic: residential floors with small amounts of scratching dirt, excluding kitchens, entrances and other high-use areas.
- Class 3 — medium to heavy traffic: residential or light commercial floors with regular traffic and some abrasive dirt.
- Class 4 — heavy traffic: residential and commercial floors with considerable traffic and scratching dirt.
- Class 5 — heavy commercial floors with heavy traffic and very abrasive soil.
So a bathroom floor is the one room the scale describes explicitly, and Class 1 technically covers it. In practice we'd rather see Class 3 or higher on a family bathroom floor — grit tracked in from a hallway doesn't respect the category boundary, and the extra headroom costs nothing.
What this means for you: use the class to rule tiles out, not to rank the survivors. Class 0 on your floor is a mistake; between two floor-rated tiles, colour and finish matter more than one class step.
3. DCOF: the spec that keeps a wet floor from hurting someone
This is the one homeowners skip and regret. Dynamic coefficient of friction measures grip while a foot is already moving — the moment you actually slip. The DCOF AcuTest, introduced with ANSI A137.1-2012 and now carried in ANSI A326.3, uses a tribometer with a leather sensor and a sodium lauryl sulfate solution to simulate a wet, soapy walking surface.
ANSI A326.3 sets situation-specific minimums; for a level interior floor expected to be walked on while wet — exactly a bathroom floor — the value is 0.42 DCOF or higher.
The TCNA is blunt about the limits of that number, and so are we: 0.42 is a minimum, not a safety guarantee. The same bulletin notes a tile at exactly 0.42 can still be hazardous in the wrong setting. Slope, soap film, bare wet feet, and how often the floor gets cleaned all change the real-world risk.
What this means for you: if the bathroom is for kids, for aging parents, or has a curbless shower where water tracks onto the main floor, don't shop at the 0.42 line — shop above it, and choose a matte or textured finish over polished. A high-gloss polished tile can look extraordinary and still be the wrong specification for a family bathroom.
4. Porcelain vs ceramic vs natural stone
Porcelain
Our default recommendation for Vancouver bathroom floors. At 0.5% absorption or less it shrugs off the constant humidity, it's dimensionally stable over radiant heat, and through-body porcelain hides chips because the colour runs through the tile rather than sitting in a glaze. Ceramic
Softer body, higher absorption, generally cheaper. Genuinely good for bathroom walls — lighter, easier to cut, plenty of design range. On floors it's a compromise unless the specific tile is floor-rated and vitreous.
Natural stone
Marble, travertine, limestone and slate are beautiful and none of them are low-maintenance. Stone is porous by nature, which means it stains from shampoo, cosmetics and hard-water minerals, and it needs periodic resealing for the life of the floor. Polished marble in a wet bathroom is also a slip-resistance problem, not just a maintenance one. Choose stone because you want stone and accept the upkeep — never because you were told it's the durable option. Our tile & stone selection is where to start if that's the look you're after.
What this means for you: if you want the marble look without the marble maintenance, porcelain that reproduces marble veining is the honest answer — and it's what we usually recommend.
5. If you'd rather not tile: LVP, engineered wood, and one material to avoid
Luxury vinyl plank — read the wear layer
The single number that predicts how LVP ages is the wear layer: the clear protective film over the printed image, measured in mil (one mil = one thousandth of an inch). It is not the same as overall plank thickness, and thick plank with a thin wear layer is the trap. A thicker wear layer takes longer to scuff through to the print — once that happens the plank can't be refinished, only replaced.
Manufacturers publish the mil figure and their own residential and commercial ratings. Compare wear layer to wear layer within the grade you're shopping, and treat the manufacturer's use rating plus warranty as the real spec. A rigid-core plank (SPC) is the version we'd put in a bathroom — it's waterproof and dimensionally stable in a humid room.
Engineered wood — possible, with conditions
Engineered wood's plywood or HDF core is far more dimensionally stable than solid wood, which is why it survives Vancouver's humidity swings elsewhere in the house. In a powder room with no shower it can work well. In a full bathroom it's a conditional yes at best: it needs sealed seams, a controlled ventilation strategy, and an owner who wipes up standing water. Its wear layer is real wood, so it can be sanded — but only once or twice, depending on that layer's thickness.
Solid hardwood — don't
Solid wood moves with moisture. It absorbs humidity across the grain, swells, and when it dries it cups, gaps, and lifts finish. A bathroom cycles from dry to near-saturated every single day, and Vancouver's baseline humidity never gives it a proper dry season to recover in. There is no installation technique that fixes this. If you love the look of wood in a bathroom, use wood-look porcelain or SPC plank instead.
6. Grout, sealing, and why the failure is usually here
Great tile with the wrong grout still fails. A few things worth deciding on purpose:
- Cementitious grout is porous. It absorbs water and staining, and it needs sealing plus periodic resealing. That's maintenance you're signing up for.
- Epoxy grout is non-porous and stain-resistant, doesn't require sealing, and costs more in both material and labour because it's less forgiving to install. In a heavily used shower it frequently earns the difference.
- Narrower joints and larger tiles mean less grout to maintain — one of the strongest practical arguments for large-format porcelain in a bathroom.
- Grout is not waterproofing. The waterproofing membrane behind and beneath the tile is what keeps water out of the structure. Grout is a filler. Assuming otherwise is how a shower rots a subfloor invisibly for years.
- Movement joints matter — the TCNA Handbook covers where they belong. Tile that has nowhere to expand cracks, and heated floors make that expansion larger.
What this means for you: ask your contractor which waterproofing system they're using and how the grout will be maintained. A contractor who has a specific answer is a contractor who has done this properly before.
7. Underfloor heating — confirm compatibility before you buy
Heated floors are the upgrade we most often recommend in a Vancouver bathroom, and on a damp February morning it's obvious why. Two things to get right:
- Check the material is rated for it. Porcelain and ceramic are ideal — dense, stable, and good at conducting heat. LVP and engineered wood are often compatible but only within a manufacturer-specified maximum surface temperature. Exceeding it voids the warranty and can delaminate or cup the plank. Get the number from the manufacturer's own installation instructions, not from a salesperson.
- Plan the height. An electric mat plus its self-levelling compound raises the floor, which affects door clearances and the transition into the hallway. It's a detail that has to be decided at design stage, not on install day.
8. Why Vancouver's climate changes the answer
Our bathrooms don't dry out the way they do in a drier climate. Between the rain, the coastal humidity and homes that are sealed tighter than they used to be, ambient moisture in a Lower Mainland bathroom stays elevated long after the shower stops.
Practically, that means three things. Low-absorption materials matter more here than they would inland. Ventilation is part of the flooring decision, not separate from it — an undersized or unvented fan will damage a good floor. And any wood-based product is working against a stacked deck. It's the reason porcelain and rigid-core vinyl dominate what we actually install in Greater Vancouver bathrooms.

9. The short version: what to ask for
- Water absorption — impervious (0.5% or less) or vitreous for a bathroom floor.
- Visible abrasion class — floor-rated, not Class 0. The standard puts domestic bathrooms at Class 1; we'd still push for Class 3 or above in a family bathroom.
- Wet DCOF — 0.42 minimum per ANSI A326.3, and higher for kids, seniors, or curbless showers.
- LVP wear layer in mil — plus the manufacturer's use rating and warranty.
- Heated-floor compatibility — including the maximum surface temperature.
- Grout type and waterproofing system — named specifically, in writing.

That low porosity is what makes it stable in a permanently humid room. Ceramic has a softer, more absorbent body; it's an excellent wall tile and a compromise on a bathroom floor unless the specific tile is floor-rated and vitreous.
Can I put hardwood in a bathroom?+
Solid hardwood, no. It absorbs moisture and swells, then cups and gaps as it dries — and a Vancouver bathroom cycles from dry to saturated daily with no real dry season for it to recover in. Engineered wood is more dimensionally stable and can work in a powder room, or in a full bathroom with sealed seams, strong ventilation and a diligent owner. If you want the look with none of the risk, wood-look porcelain or rigid-core (SPC) vinyl plank is the better specification.
What is a wear layer, and why does it matter more than plank thickness?+
The wear layer is the clear protective film over the printed design on vinyl plank, measured in mil (one thousandth of an inch). It's what actually resists scuffing, and once it wears through to the print the plank can only be replaced, not refinished. Overall plank thickness affects feel and how well the floor bridges subfloor imperfections — it says nothing about durability. Compare mil to mil, and check the manufacturer's residential or commercial use rating and warranty alongside it.
Does natural stone work in a bathroom?+
It can, if you accept the maintenance. Marble, travertine, limestone and slate are porous, so they stain from cosmetics, shampoo and hard-water minerals and need periodic resealing for the life of the floor. Polished stone is also a poor choice underfoot in a wet room on slip-resistance grounds. Choose stone for the look and commit to the upkeep — don't choose it expecting it to be the low-maintenance option.
Is epoxy grout worth the extra cost?+
In a heavily used shower, usually yes. Epoxy grout is non-porous and stain-resistant and doesn't need sealing, where cementitious grout absorbs water and staining and needs periodic resealing. Epoxy costs more in material and in labour because it sets faster and is less forgiving to install. One thing it is not, in either form, is waterproofing — that job belongs to the membrane behind and beneath the tile.
Can I put heated floors under vinyl plank or engineered wood?+
Often yes, but only within the manufacturer's specified maximum surface temperature — exceeding it can delaminate or cup the plank and will typically void the warranty. Get that figure from the manufacturer's own installation instructions before you buy. Porcelain and ceramic are the most forgiving materials over radiant heat. Also plan for the added floor height from the heating mat and levelling compound at design stage, since it affects door clearances and transitions.
